First, don't do these three things
- Don't fire back publicly. An emotional reply is read by every future customer and can never be unseen.
- Don't mass-flag the review from multiple accounts — it signals manipulation and weakens your case.
- Don't offer the reviewer anything in exchange for removal. That's extortion-adjacent territory and can breach platform rules itself.
Work out if the review is actually removable
"Bad" and "removable" are different categories. Removable reviews break a rule: fake, conflict of interest, off-topic, abusive, spam or defamatory. A harsh but honest review from a real customer is bad — but not removable. Sorting one from the other before you act saves weeks of wasted effort.
If it's removable: don't leave it to chance
Removable reviews don't come down because you asked nicely — Google needs a properly documented case showing exactly which policy the review breaks. Most DIY attempts are rejected on the first pass, and each rejection makes the next attempt harder. If it's not removable: reduce its power
- Reply once, calmly. Short, factual, no defensiveness. The reply is for future readers, not the reviewer.
- Fix the underlying issue where one exists — then say so in the reply.
- Build fresh positive reviews so the bad one ages down the page and the average recovers.
